Impact Insights: Friend For All’s Rapid Start Initiative
Did you know that Memphis ranks as one of the top cities in the U.S. for new HIV infections? Friends For All (Friends) is committed to changing that by making HIV care more accessible, supportive, and immediate. Our recent Rapid Start initiative, which offers same-day HIV treatment, aims to bring positive changes to the lives of those newly diagnosed with HIV. Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far and why it’s important!
What’s the Rapid Start Initiative?
The Rapid Start initiative means fast-tracked, 72-hour access to treatment for anyone who tests positive for HIV at our clinics or pop-up testing events. This quick response helps people take control of their health sooner, giving them the best chance to stay healthy and prevent further transmission.
What Have We Found?
Since launching this program in July 2023, we’ve tested 2,131 people in our Memphis community! Here’s a snapshot of the outcomes:
125 people tested positive for HIV, and 14 were newly diagnosed.
12 of those 14 individuals (that’s 83%) began treatment within 72 hours.
90 days after starting treatment, 83% had achieved viral suppression and attended multiple follow-up appointments.
These results show that quick treatment access works—but we’re not stopping there!
How Friends For All is Tackling Challenges
Some people couldn’t start treatment within the 72-hour window at our pop-up events. Our solution? We’re exploring a mobile unit for on-the-spot treatment, even after clinic hours, and a telehealth system that makes connecting with a provider anytime, anywhere.
We're also addressing other challenges people face, like transportation and food security. Friends For All provides rides to medical appointments and food pantry support, ensuring everyone can stay engaged in their health journey.
Why Does This Matter?
When people begin HIV treatment immediately, they have the best chance of reaching viral suppression. This means the virus is undetectable and can’t be transmitted further. Our goal is to create a healthier, HIV-free future for Memphis, and our Rapid Start initiative is a huge step forward!
Stay tuned for updates, and thank you for supporting Friends For All’s mission to make healthcare accessible to all! Don’t forget to
