RESOURCE & EDUCATION CENTER

The REC

  • The REC is a drop-in resource center that offers a comprehensive approach to eliminating stigma and helping our community members live well. The REC is also home to Wellness University- courses and activities designed to provide social support and education to anyone in need. We also have a clothing closet where our Friends in need can get clothes when they need it most.

  • In The REC, we serve coffee and other donated items. Breakfast is served daily until 10 a.m., and midday snacks are served starting at 11 a.m. Limited computers with free Wi-Fi access and free technical assistance are available daily. All visitors will be encouraged to participate in daily Wellness University courses and assist Friends employees in day-to-day volunteer opportunities.

  • Wellness University is a program consisting of online and in-person group education and support to help individuals live well. These classes assist in the coordination of life skills, medical care and adherence, emotional management, and enhancement in the quality of life. Our course categories are as follows:

    • Economic Stability Classes help clients develop skills to improve their economic stability and reduce disparities in accessing healthcare.

    • Neighborhood & Physical Environment Classes focus on improving physical fitness and navigating community resources to overcome barriers like transportation, housing, and food insecurities, promoting positive health outcomes.

    • Education Classes aim to remove barriers related to literacy, language, and vocational training, empowering individuals to improve employment opportunities and access quality care.

    • Food Classes help clients tackle food insecurity by teaching healthy recipes, budget-friendly shopping, safe food handling, and disease-specific meal planning.

    • Community & Social Context Classes help individuals develop skills in healthy communication and conflict resolution to improve relationships and enhance overall well-being in their social and community interactions.

    • Healthcare System Classes focus on addressing stigma, advocacy, and client rights while providing tools to safely navigate the complexities of the healthcare system and reduce health inequities.

    • Digital Health Literacy Classes equip participants with the skills to access, understand, and navigate healthcare information through electronic sources, improving their quality of life and access to digital health services.
