Have you heard the term “undetectable” and weren’t sure what it means? Being undetectable means that the level of HIV in your blood is so low that it cannot be detected by standard tests. This happens when someone living with HIV takes their medication as prescribed, and their viral load drops to a level that keeps them healthy. When you’re undetectable, you cannot transmit HIV to others through sex—a concept known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable).
-
Being undetectable is not just a test result; it means good health, confidence, and peace of mind. Staying undetectable helps to:
Enhance health: A low viral load keeps your immune system strong and reduces other health issues.
Prevent HIV spread: Those who are undetectable cannot transmit HIV during sexual contact.
Most people can reach undetectable status within six months of starting HIV medication, but maintaining it requires sticking to treatment and visiting healthcare providers regularly.
-
There is much confusion about being undetectable. Here are the facts:
It's safe: Being undetectable means you pose no health risk to others. Again, undetectable means untransmittable, so you cannot pass HIV along to a partner if you are undetectable.
It's possible: Most people can become undetectable with proper treatment. At Friends, we have a RapidStart program that can help you become undetectable in as little as 90 days.
It's ongoing: Maintaining undetectable status requires continuous treatment and regular check-ups. At Friends, we assign our Mid-South Friends with Medical Case Managers (MCMs) who will check-in regularly to keep you healthy and on-track.

Stigma (shame) can make it difficult to take the first step. Stigma or fear of judgment prevents many from taking the first step to tested or start treatment. In our Southern community, cultural barriers around sexual health can make this worse.
Here’s how we can change that together:
Getting tested is a way to take care of yourself, not a source of shame.
Taking medication means you're in control of your health.
Asking for help shows strength, not weakness.
Together, we can change the story. The path to being undetectable begins with knowing your status and asking for support.
